Our house is conveniently located just 15 minutes from Carcassonne.  So here are just a few ideas of what to see and do in and around Carcassonne. If you’re looking to discover the Languedoc Roussillon region of southern France with its magic combination of Mediterranean climate and French heritage, of blue seas and stunning countryside, then Carcassonne makes for a great base - with regular flights coming in from London Stansted, Dublin, Shannon, Liverpool, East Midlands and Brussels airports.

Within 15 minutes from our house, you can explore the medieval Cité and the Canal du Midi in Carcassonne.  At the heart of Carcassonne along the Aude River lies its famous fortified medieval town - called the Cité - restored to its full glory in the 19th century, and awarded UNESCO world heritage status in 1997.  Beyond the Cité, in the lower part of Carcassonne, there is the another Carcassonne must-see - the Canal du Midi which winds its way round the northern sector of the town on its way through the Aude towards the Mediterranean. 

Within an hour, here are a few recommendations of things to do - go wine tasting in the Minervois and Corbières, or relax on miles of sandy beaches at Narbonne or Gruissan plage, or visit some of the magical Cathar ruins around Rennes le Chateau, or spend your mornings in the local markets buying local produce.    Within two hours, you can go skiing or hiking/fishing in the Pyrenees, go to Andorra and Spain, and spend some time visiting the fantastic Cathar fortresses of Montségur, Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Puivert and Puilaurens.  Please contact us if you have any specific interests in mind, and we will be happy to help.
